What I learned from being a member of SHS 58--Susan Berger

What I learned from being a member of our class is..that others from other places viewed us as "privledged" (we were),spoiled (some of us were)well educated (yes, I think we were, at least by the standards I heard about when I entered a large university...lets just say that a term paper didn't throw me),that we were all snobs ( yes, some of us, no some of us) I had a friend from Great Neck who accused me of "living too close to Greenwich!" thats ok, I told her she lived too close to the "5 towns" nuff said. I think we did grow up in a somewhat protected place, although my dad, who was born in Coney Island, made sure to show us other parts of the world where nobody had a car, enough to eat and sometimes a roof over their heads. I think the pride I felt in coming from Scarsdale had more to do with my dad's overcoming the poverty of his childhood and being able to raise his family in a town that was to be aspired to by most of the world. For me it was and is just my hometown..the place I grew up in.As I wrote to Bill..I'm immune to the "Scarsdale Shuffle"..when the comment "oh you must be one of those rich kids" is uttered..my best response ..with a big smile is ...YES. that seems to end the discussion. I did live there when I was married..a million years ago..I love Westchester, its beautiful, historic and comfortable for me..but I'm glad I live in Mt. Kisco..its diverse in every way possible. As close as I am ..I don't think I've been in Scarsdale in 2 years..no reason to go. The memories are in my head and seeing the changes in the town is.....a bummer. See you soon, Susan
